With the beauty of Fall comes many leaves in your back and front yard, consider composting. Take those Fall leaves and start a new Fall composting tradition.

Here`s what you`ll need:

  • Fallen leaves
  • Grass clippings
  • A shovelful
  • A designated area at least 3 feet long by 3 feet wide

Here`s how to do it:

  • Take your leave and start spreading a layer that is several inches thick where you want to build the pile
  • Top that layer with several inches of your grass clippings
  • Add a thin layer of soil
  • Add another layer of your leaves
  • Now moisten the three layers so they come together
  • Continue to keep layering your grass clipping and leaves with a little soil mixed in, do this until the pile is 3 feet high.

Now that you have your pile, go back to it every two or three weeks and using the shovelful turn the pile so that way it gets mixed up. The stuff in the center will now be on the outside and vise versa. The first time you go to turn your pile you may see steam coming from it, (this is good, don’t worry that you did something wrong). The steam is just a sign that the pile is heating up as a result of your materials decomposing. You want to keep turning your pile every two to three weeks and keep it moist.

In order to know when your compost is done and ready to use in your garden, you`ll see these signs:

  • See earthworms
  • Center of the pile will turn into black, crumbly, sweet-smelling black gold

The benefits of having your own compost:

  • It provides excellent fertilizer for your lawn and garden
  • Reduces the number of garbage bags you send to the landfill
  • Provides financial benefits
  • Its easy
  • Its inexpensive
  • Reduces toxins
  • Reduces pollution
  • Prevents erosion
  • Promotes healthy growth to trees and planets
