After raising brand standards, refining eco-friendly business systems, company eyes nationwide growth

NEW YORK — Upon acquiring ECOMAIDS more than two years ago with visions of preserving and strengthening what made the brand the pioneer of the green cleaning services segment, Charles Internicola decided that the franchise dedicated to using only natural, eco-friendly products and techniques first needed to clean house before restarting expansion.

Internicola, the founder of New York, N.Y.-based Internicola Law Firm who is recognized as one of the franchise industry’s most influential consultants and advocates for entrepreneurship, started Thoughts Are Things Franchising LLC to buy and lead the ECOMAIDS brand. His first move as the chain’s new owner was to suspend all new franchise sales at ECOMAIDS for two years in order to evaluate and improve every facet of the concept, from operations systems and marketing programs to inventory requirements and the capital structure.

During that time, franchisees who were less focused on the kind of business systems that build and grow a service franchise exited the brand. The core of successful and dedicated franchise partners who stayed helped shape how ECOMAIDS has evolved and intend to expand in a sustainable manner.

In alignment with the new franchisor, ECOMAIDS franchisees worked to preserve the brand’s foundational standards of cleaning homes and businesses without exposing clients to harmful chemicals, toxins and allergens. Thoughts Are Things’ leaders impressed upon the franchisees the significance of protecting ECOMAIDS’ differentiated brand by offering customers not only the eco-friendly products upon which they rely but also the exceptional customer service that confirms ECOMAIDS fits those clients’ lifestyles, engenders customer loyalty and drives referrals.

“For our dedicated customers and franchisee partners, ECOMAIDS is much more than a cleaning service,” Internicola said. “It is a brand that is deeply rooted in a health-conscious lifestyle and exceptional customer service and care. Our franchisee partners are leaders in their communities who believe that entrepreneurship and business can serve a purpose of influencing positive change for their customers and communities.”

Internicola and his management team enhanced certain operational standards that will ensure ECOMAIDS’ future growth is sustainable and reflects the best practices of purpose-driven franchise brands. All new ECOMAIDS franchisees will drive branded vehicles and work out of commercial facilities. Thoughts Are Things has also raised capital requirements to attract partners capable of significant expansion. The franchise’s marketing and customer relationship management systems received a complete overhaul to incorporate the best practices that built Internicola’s eponymous law firm into a national brand.

“If my experience working with franchise brands taught me anything, it’s that the franchisees are such valuable partners and are the customers we must serve first as a company,” Internicola said. “I know that franchise support systems and strategy can take a concept as unique as ECOMAIDS and ensure that the brand grows as large and as fast as it could and should. But it starts with an unbelievable brand, which is why I went all-in to acquire ECOMAIDS and provide the logistical support to unlock its full potential.”

Internicola noted that ECOMAIDS can offer an exclusive territory on a standard market for a relatively affordable investment of just less than $90,000 on the low end, which includes a required $30,000 of reserve capital. ECOMAIDS’ other major differentiator in the cleaning services franchise space is its cultivation of both residential and commercial accounts, broadening the opportunities for potential franchisees and staff members in a given market.

“We’re able to offer our services to virtually any type of account in the community and leverage our unique brand at the micro level,” Internicola said. “We can run a very successful program catered toward new parents wanting a safe environment for their newborns, while at the same time recruiting as clients all the local day care facilities, nursing homes, and hospitals and physician offices in town. Countless families and local businesses are proud to show that they’re cleaned by people sharing our green principles.”

ECOMAIDS’ expansion plans call for growing from seven current franchisees to 25 over the next two years. Development will focus primarily on the East and West Coasts where the brand already has a strong presence, including key markets like Portland, Ore., where master franchisee Lindsay Dellasega has grown steadily throughout the transition period and could soon pilot an area development model for future expansion.

As his organization looks to restart franchise growth for ECOMAIDS, Internicola is confident the company will find the right operating partners because it will be looking for the “purpose-driven entrepreneurs” who share the same commitment to ECOMAIDS’ identity as a lifestyle brand.

“The reason why franchisees would buy into ECOMAIDS is because they want to be in business and stay true to the principles of a healthful lifestyle in all facets of the home, including a clean environment free from chemicals, toxins and allergens,” Internicola said. “These entrepreneurs would not find ECOMAIDS because they’re looking for just any franchise; they would find the brand because they live their lives by these core principles.”

Founded by a conscientious mother who sought to protect her family and newborn child from harmful toxins and chemicals found in everyday cleaners, agents and sprays, ECOMAIDS is a cleaning services franchise that empowers local entrepreneurs to serve residential and commercial clients in accordance with a healthful lifestyle philosophy built around natural products. Franchisees currently serve Arizona, Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio and Oregon.
